Older ideas about a "gene" or SNP being the "cause" of a characteristic or abnormality has been modified by data indicating that many sites interact to influence characteristics. Natural selection ALWAYS acts for adaptive features, but environments change and they are no longer adaptive, and organisms don't survive. This biological picture is complicated by the role of culture in human evolution which has a separate influence on survival from the biological (Wikipedia: Dual Inheritance Theory). "Evolution is real."= complex statistical models predict changes in survival of organisms in defined environments. Don't look for this under a rock!
