I split the day into 4 segments. Morning (wake up-12), early afternoon (12-3), late afternoon (3-6) and evening (6-bedtime). At the end of each segment I rate it as depressed, sad, meh, happy, or very happy. This is a rough average of the emotions I felt during the segment.
